Summer 2009
Dear Alumni & Friends of Madonna,
When I attended Commencement at Madonna University as an honored guest, the recipient of the Alumna of the Year Award, believe me when I tell you it was both a humbling and exhilarating experience.
From my vantage point close to the stage, I watched close to 800 students receive their master’s and bachelor’s degrees. These men and women came in all shapes, sizes, ages and cultures. Some walked, some wheeled, but all crossed the stage proudly with their heads held high.
What I saw was the result of years of sacrifice put forth by the Felician Sisters, administrators, professors, teachers, support staff and students to transform the small college that I knew back in 1961 to the thriving, university we know today.
What I heard that day were stories about the many different journeys that students had taken to get to that stage and the role the Madonna community played in getting them there – academically and financially. These stories, together with my passion for my alma mater, prompted me to accept the role as chair for the 2008-2009 Madonna University Annual Fund campaign.
As chair, I have heard from students like Kim Wall who is studying general science and math for elementary teachers. Kim’s grandparents were honest, hardworking farmers who raised 17 children; all of them college educated. Scholarships played an important role from time to time in ensuring that this family continued to have access to a valuable faith-based higher education.
For Kim, receiving financial support from sources like the Madonna University Annual Fund made it possible for her to attend a school that shares her family’s values. The scholarship made it easier for her to focus on her classes and maintain her high grade point average, become involved in campus programs and activities, and remain positive about her future as an alumna.
Kim shared, “I’m exceedingly grateful for the scholarships that have given me the opportunity to attend a school where I not only learn, but where I belong.”
With this in mind I am asking you to invest in our students through this year’s Annual Fund campaign. Your gift will help offset the rising costs of educating the future of our society – men and women who embrace and embody our universal Franciscan values, and who lead by example in providing services to others.
If you have never made a monetary contribution to Madonna I ask you to make that investment now. Your gift of any amount will be appreciated and put to good use to support students like Kim, as well as the most urgent needs of the University.
Can I count on your help in achieving our goal?
God bless you for your generosity.
